Health and Safety is Health and Safety wherever you work?

Health and Safety is Health and Safety wherever you work?

Health and Safety is Health and Safety wherever you work?
Why the fuss over asking the HSE Professional if he has experience in a certain Industry ? Health and Safety is Health and Safety wherever you work? Many HSE Professionals can relate to what I am speaking about.

The bottom line here is health and safety procedures and policies apply to all the industries I have worked whether it be Facilities Management , Construction in a green Field or Brown Field onshore and offshore, Pharmaceutical  construction build, building a cement factory ,operating a camp in the back of beyond etc. These are all based of course on legislation ,if working abroad where legislation does not apply then best practice is applied from legislation elsewhere.

We refer to SMS as HSEMS these days ,of course these apply in all industries.

A safety and health management system means the part of the Organisation's management system which covers:

the health and safety work organisation and policy in a company
the planning process for accident and ill health prevention
the line management responsibilities and
the practices, procedures and resources for developing and implementing, reviewing and maintaining the occupational safety and health policy.
The system should cover the entire gambit of an employer's occupational health and safety organisation. The key elements of a successful safety and health management system are (i always refer to this as the 5 successful steps):

  1. Policy and commitment
  2.  Planning
  3. Implementation and operation
  4. Measuring performance
  5. Auditing and reviewing performance

The SMS can be written by the HSE Professional ,implemented, audited and reviewed and training conducted.

Environments are different yes however HSE Professionals can adapt to any industry as Health and Safety is Health and Safety wherever one works.Only my opinion.
